gulbarg

new build, residential

Gulbarg is the proud culmination of many hours of dedicated design and construction coordination work to deliver a brand new family home.

NEON architecture delivered every stage of the RIBA plan of work, helping the client refine their brief through to achieving a turn-key delivery of this prestigious building.

Our clients had enthusiastically briefed us to build their ‘forever’ home for their young family, citing their love of both industrial and Georgian design. We relished this challenge. Using traditional Georgian proportions, a villa form was proposed centring around a grand 2 storey entrance hall featuring a fully vaulted roof light enabling natural light to permeate deep into the floor plan of this refined house. To prevent visual massing sprawl, we incorporated contemporary additions to the side and rear.

The house embraces our design philosophy of combining both contemporary and traditional architecture, also using contemporary and traditional materials.

The Georgian elements of the building received a simple heritage rich off-white smooth trowelled monocouche render abutting a subtly extruded set of stone plinth, aperture surrounds and string course to add definition to the simplicity of form. The roof is set to a low pitch and is finished with high quality Spanish slate with modern Zinc guttering on secret fixed fascia and soffit.

To the rear, a contemporary vertical hit-and-miss timber clad play room sits alongside the traditional veranda covered by modern standing seam Zinc roof and overlooks an exciting contemporary landscaping design from the renowned Holland Green Landscaping designers.

The interior of the property is where the real beauty of the house begins to reveal itself.

We began designing the house around a grand entrance hall where a roof lantern delivers natural daylight deep into the heart of the house resulting in a space that always feels light and energised. The skeiling, centred perfectly over the free standing cantilevered cast-in-situ concrete staircase, encourages vertical views to the sky from within. From the wrap-around landing, the bedrooms are positioned.

The interior finishes have been meticulously coordinated in collaboration with London's famous Catherine Wilman Interiors. Their delicately chosen palette of soft yet robust finishes brings about a velvety sumptuous collection of colours, textiles, timber and stone surfaces which further emphasise either a light and airy space or a moody and cosy inwardly focussed room depending on its intended use. The kitchen, designed by Crouch Design coordinates perfectly with the colours and other stonework within that balances opulence with a quiet and relaxing charm.

An exciting element of this new home is the garage. With a full height curved sliding faceted automated timber door and cleverly concealed cantilevered flat roof, the soft contemporary styling of the garage enables this significantly subservient massing element to harmoniously connect with the main Georgian inspired massing adjacent. The neat technical detailing of the door tracks and it's housing enables it to seamlessly wrap around the floor plan of the garage, maximising space whilst creating an almost theatrical experience to present the client's beautifully curated collection of influential classic cars. This is especially effective at dusk when the studio lighting within spills out to illuminate the smooth white rendered walls.
